How to choose the right SSD

Choose storage by capacity, motherboard compatibility and real workload needs—not only the largest advertised speed.

Start with capacity and workload

Capacity has the largest effect on daily convenience. Leave room for the operating system, applications, games, project files and future updates. An almost-full SSD can become inconvenient and may have less free space available for background management.

For a gaming build, 1TB is a practical starting point, while large modern libraries can justify 2TB or more. Workstations should estimate active project data and backup requirements separately.

Understand M.2, NVMe and SATA

M.2 describes a physical form factor, while NVMe is a storage protocol commonly carried over PCI Express. Some M.2 slots can support SATA drives, NVMe drives or only one type. Read the motherboard manual for the exact slot.

A 2.5-inch SATA SSD is slower in sequential transfers than a modern NVMe drive but remains responsive for many everyday tasks. It can be useful when M.2 slots are occupied or when adding economical storage.

Check PCIe generation and lane sharing

A newer PCIe SSD can often operate in an older compatible slot at the older speed. Buying the fastest specification is unnecessary if the workload or motherboard cannot use it.

Some motherboard M.2 slots share bandwidth with SATA ports or expansion slots. The manual explains which connections become unavailable when a specific slot is populated.

Look beyond peak speed

Advertised sequential speed does not describe every workload. Controller quality, NAND type, cache behavior, sustained writes, thermal control and firmware can affect real performance.

For important work, consider endurance rating, warranty and independent testing. A heatsink may help sustained high-speed transfers, but many general workloads do not continuously stress the drive.

Storage is not a backup

No SSD is immune to failure, accidental deletion, theft or malware. Keep important files in at least one separate location and test that backups can be restored.

Use the primary SSD for speed and organize backups based on how costly the data would be to recreate. A reliable backup plan matters more than a small benchmark difference.
