How to avoid a CPU and GPU bottleneck

Every PC has a limiting component in a particular workload. There is no universal bottleneck percentage: the result changes with the game, resolution, graphics settings and frame-rate target.

A bottleneck changes by workload

A CPU-heavy strategy game can be processor-limited while a visually demanding game on the same PC is graphics-card-limited. Treat fixed online percentages as rough signals, not measurements.

Resolution changes the balance

Lower resolutions and very high frame-rate targets place more pressure on the processor. Higher resolutions and demanding visual settings usually increase graphics-card load.

Build around your actual target

Choose a monitor resolution, refresh rate and the games or applications you care about. Compare recent benchmarks using similar settings, then keep enough budget for memory, storage, cooling and a reliable power supply.

  • 1080p high refresh can need a stronger CPU
  • 1440p and 4K usually demand more GPU performance
  • Competitive and simulation games can behave differently

Leave room for upgrades

A balanced platform, suitable PSU and enough case clearance make future upgrades easier. Do not sacrifice component quality merely to remove a theoretical bottleneck.
